I have a beautiful new friend. Inside and out.
She just moved here from my favorite city, Nashville with her talented husband and her sweet little mister, William.
She has a huge heart and had a passion to give her son the best birthday party she possibly could!
When she asked me to help make a back drop for her little man's Peter Pan themed birthday party, I was honored! ( and a bit intimidated, considering she has an extensive background in event planning and does everything with impecable taste :)
At first, I envisioned folding a bed sheet in half and tying it between two long wooden poles, to emulate the mast and sail of Captain Hook's ship. Then I wanted to paint sillouhettes or "shadows" of Peter and Wendy in black.
But then I received this adorable invite, and had a change of heart.
Treasure map back drop it is! :)
My goal: To make this treasure map look weathered and dingy, without looking too dirty.
Let the tea-staining commence!
As a devoted morning tea drinker, my cupboard was stocked full of Classic Lipton black tea.
(The following is probably quite self-explanatory, but I will review anyways :)
First I heated the water in a microwave safe bowl, with tea bags in tow.
I made sure to keep a strong tea to minimal water ratio in an effort to give the tea a deep brown color for staining.
I found a large tub and let the tea and sheet sit over night. The next morning, I sqeezed out all remaining moisture and threw it in the dryer.
The next morning when the sheet was dry, I began to sketch out the treasure map with light strokes from a sharpie pen.
Then several layers of very wet paint (for spreadability) was thrown onto our "canvas."
(Please try to avoid the messy basement we are trying to re-finish :)
Even though I couldnt get an exact likeness of the characters because of time constraints and difficulty working on fabric, it was incredibly peaceful to take the time to paint, while listening to "Michael Buble" radio on Pandora.
What made it even better? A few days later, it stopped raining and I took the mural outside!!
The final product:
I was so blessed to be able to contribute to this special boy's party:
That face!! Oh, my heart...
Happy Birthday Sweet William!!
And what a beautiful family!!!!
Thank you friends for letting me contribute to this precious occasion.
Such an honor!
