The "Nature" of Life...

I have a theory...

I often wonder if the vintage/etsy/pinterest movement in decor and in life has been sparked by a hunger to get back to the basics...

A simpler time...A time of less chaos and more community...

People seem to be craving an earlier moment in time, as women and men make things from scratch...eat organic...pick up sewing or knitting, or make their own furniture.

For me, I have always embraced vintage things because I am an old soul, but suddenly...it is everywhere. I collected antique hats as a young girl, read, baked petite fours, drank tea, painted, crafted and at that time, could care less how "nerdy" I may have been :)

Now, this home-grown movement seems to be showing up in so many areas of life, from decor to what we eat and I cant help but imagine that we are trying to re-embrace the true "nature" of life...? These simple things that bring pure joy and less processed/packaged "convenience" that tends to strip our creativity.

Why is it that something so simple as birds chirping on a sunny summer morning can relax us?

When we go to the farmer's market, a rush of excitement builds up within so many of us to make a meal from scratch and take pride in what we have created.

Why do we (ladies) get giddy over the beauty and soft fragrance of a rose from a loved one?

Waves crashing upon the shore, watching for falling stars, or the fall of rain on a cozy quiet night?

Or for me, something as simple as taking a pencil to a piece of paper, or throwing paint upon a canvas...

Last week, I played "Disney Radio" on pandora for my kids in class. The song "Bare Necessities" came on from The Jungle Book and it made me smile from eart to ear.

Not just because of the incredibly clever lyrics Disney always comes up with...

or the play on  words as Balu the bear sings about "Bear" Necessities...

...but it reminded me as I all too often remember how critical the "Bare" Necessities truly are in our lives...

I watched my little artists inspect each new utensil with great care as their minds were blooming with new knowledge of how to use different kinds of paint or brushes. It blessed my heart to watch them learn and gain such joy out of something so simple...so natural and yet so, so profound.

As I child I was blessed with a mother who cared about us beyond comprehension. I remember countless explorations in the great out doors with her. And during a nice day, television was the last thing on our mind because we had exploring to do.

I gained so much valuable creativity by living so much of my life as a child outdoors...embracing nature.

I want to encourage you. Try to specifically look for the simple things that make you smile this week.

For me, it always amazes me how the most simple things make my days bright, when I stop and take a moment to notice them...

Feeling stressed? Perhaps its time to put down that cell phone. Perhaps try closing that lap top for an hour. Perhaps mute your TV, or better yet shut it off all together.

(I need to tell myself this everyday.)

Let nature whisper in your ear and listen...

Listen to the wind in the trees, the rustling of the leaves or the song of a sweet child.

Breath deep...

Grab a paint brush and come paint with me.

Get back to the True Nature of LIfe...
